Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration. This is one of many patterns bearing the name Harvard. It dates to 1883, and is found with marks of the E. G. Webster Co, as well as (anchor) Wm. Rogers & Son AA, (the mark on the ones offered here)and Derby silver Co. The pattern is in the Aesthetic style, with stylized florals, and an asymmetrical arrangement of geometric designs. The handle is surmounted by a corona. The terms dinner and luncheon as applied to silverware cause some confusion. They refer to different sizes of flatware, specifically knives and forks. The dinner is the larger of the two; the luncheon is about three fourths the size of the dinner. The reason for these differences could be that when water had to be pumped by hand, and wood chopped to heat the water, then dish washing only happened once a day. Thus the household needed two distinct sets of flatware. Forks only came into common use in the 1840s, and the idea of having two forks per person was one of great luxury. The 5 dinner forks offered here measure about 7 1/4". These are not pieces of new silver. They show the patina of as much as 140 years of use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is some heel wear and silver loss on the backs of the tines; there is some slight tine wear, and the backs of the tines have some short deeper scratches. The pattern is crisp and clear. I polish all silver before listing on eBay. Please email with any questions before bidding. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE AUCTION DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY.
